TV Guide / AOL Chat

Stephen Nichols

Nov. 14, 2000

TVG Nichols: Hello and thanks for having me.

TVG Nichols: I look forward to chatting with you all.

Question: Stephen, we’ve been waiting for what seems an eternity for the relationship between Stefan and Helena to be explored. Do you believe the new writing regime will explore this dysfunctional mother/son story?

TVG Nichols: I would like to believe that they will explore the relationship between Stefan and Helena. It could be very interesting and very compelling.

Question: Stephen I am a 15 year fan and I have to say the highlight for me was seeing you do theatre. I didn’t think I could be more impressed than I already was seeing you act on screen, but you came alive on stage. Any plans for theatre work in the future?

TVG Nichols: Yes. There are plans. Not firm ones. But I’m definitely itching to get back on the stage very soon. On Jan 14th, we’re participating in a 28 day theatre festival in LA. We’ll be doing scenes from an American Theatre. One night only, at the Ivar Theatre.

TVG Nichols: More information will be all over the web soon. Many fans of General Hospital we’ll be able to see their favorite stars on stage. I’m on of the chairpeople and I helped to organized it.Question: Hi Stephen, I am enjoying Stefan and Chloe & it’s such a breath of fresh to air to see Stefan smile! I love Chloe reading the journal. Will we see/hear any more about Stefan’s childhood? What will Stefan & Chloe’s relationship be when they get back to Port C?

TVG Nichols: That’s a whole lot. Thank you first of all for appreciating the work we’re doing. Chloe and I will be getting closer and many times she will probably almost discover that I’ve deceived her all this time. She’ll almost discover that I deceived her on the island several times. It’s refreshing for me to smile once in a while. As for my childhood, I enjoy when they explore that stuff, cause it just clues into what my character might have been if I wasn’t thrown into my family responsibilities. I really enjoy that. I think it’s a good device. Stefan wasn’t ready to open up to anyone. He needs something like that. And Chloe needs to see inside of Stefan.

Question: has there ever been something written in the scripts that you were maybe hesitant about doing or saying?

TVG Nichols: There was one very big one when I left Port Charles and faked my death as it were. I told the writers that I felt Stefan could not do this. I asked that they give me some kind of opportunity to get word that I wasn’t dead. That I could get word, but they didn’t go for it. That was probably the biggest one so far. I had to get my mind around that.

Question: what are some of the funniest moments that have happened on set?

TVG Nichols: It’s like someone asking you to tell a joke. You go blank immediately. If something comes up during the rest of the chat, I’ll throw it in there.

Question: If u could control your characters destiny what would you have happen?

TVG Nichols: I would go back to the initial question, exploring the relationship between Helena and Stefan. Without giving up any information, I do have a very good story idea that would involve, Helena, Nicholas, Alexa, me… I think I agree with the decision of the people on the show, that Stefan should never be truly happy. I agree with that. And think that he’s not the kind of person who could ever be truly happy. I’d like to avoid the setting into a happy life. & can you hear him?

Question: Stephen will your fans ever get to see your paintings in person?

TVG Nichols: Yeah. At some point as soon as I have enough of them. Also another line on that last question. I want him to get the hell out of that damn hospital and never come back.

Question: Stefan’s exile has been torture to watch, especially his isolation from the rest of the cast. Was that something you expected, or were you surprised by the length of time you have been away and the lack of movement in the story?

TVG Nichols: Was I surprised…honestly I wasn’t surprised. There was a lot of political turmoil on the show. My exile was one of the results of that turmoil. I was not surprised. I saw it coming. I was not happy about it. I felt if I bided my time it would get better.

Question: Hi Stephen I am a long time fan, and have read so many interviews over the years, one more interesting than the next. Are you planning to ever write an autobiography? What would you title it?

TVG Nichols: LOL… You know, I really doubt that my life would ever merit an autobiography. I doubt that would happen. I’m sure that I would write some parts of my story and put them into screenplays or stage plays. You write from your life. Yes, I’ve had some very interesting experiences. I’d like to use storytelling somehow.

Question: Do you or would you give to any charities, and what would it be

TVG Nichols: I have always been fond of any charities that benefit children. When things come up and when friends approach me about the big charities, I help them. Recently, I have a friend whose child has been diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. I just gave to that charity. I’ve done a lot of work with Make a Wish. It’s a very worthwhile charity for children who are terminally ill.

Question: Do you get gifts from fans? And if so, what was the coolest?

TVG Nichols: Yes I do get gifts. I have to say, that when I left Days of Our Lives, a lovely lady named Carol Catugt (actually the last name is Baquet, this was a typo by whoever was doing the typing for Stephen) put together a shadowbox of memories from my 5 years of DOOL. Every one of them was so specific that when it touched the core of me. It was an amazing gift really successful. In fact I still have that in my dressing room, along with my Patch coffee mug.

Question: Have you ever wondered what you would be doing right now if you had never started acting? How did you start acting and why?

TVG Nichols: I wonder every day what I’d be doing. I believe I’d be in some kind of creative area. Perhaps painting or sculpting. I might have gone into some time of woodworking or architecture. I like building things. Many people know this story, so I’ll make it short… I moved to LA to become a monk. After doing that for three years, I realized I wasn’t going to live my life as a monk. I looked for work and auditioned in LA for a theatre company. I realized I loved acting and it was something I wanted to do and make a living at.

Question: What is your dream acting role?

TVG Nichols: One of them was Biff in ‘Death of a Salesman‘. I did it once. When I saw it in NY with Brian Dennehy, I told myself I belong on that stage. I would love to do that before I get too old, on Broadway.

Question: Are you going to be in any upcoming movies?

TVG Nichols: It’s taking up most of my time now, again. Over the summer, I had a directing job that I will be doing a feature film that my wife has written. It’s a unique story that takes place in LA. I can’t tell you much else about it, but I will not be acting in it.

TVG Nichols: Well, thank you for bearing with us during the lean period of the summer. Hopefully, we’ll try to get more air time. If not I’ll have to go to Days of Our Lives.
