“Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.”
Perhaps if Stefan Cassadine had heeded these famous words, he wouldn’t be in his current predicament. Then again, if he had, General Hospital viewers would have been denied the fabulous tour-de-force recently enacted by Stephen Nichols, who plays Stefan!
It all began when Stefan decided to fake his death so that he could buy himself time to deal with the threat of his own mother Helena – and because of this, his nemesis Luke was charged with his murder! The deception was as logically complicated as it ended up being emotionally costly. While in hiding, Stefan arranged for Chloe to be kidnapped to his island hideaway so her psychic dreams could give him information on Helena and her plans. Viewers were treated to the potential of a budding romance between the dark knight and the beautiful blonde heroine, who was vulnerable after losing the love of her life, Jax.
The drama continued and the pathos heightened when Stefan (and Chloe) returned home and he shared a heartfelt reunion with his nephew Nikolas. The moment was bittersweet for Stefan. He was glad to soothe Nikolas’ grief, but the look on Stefan’s face betrayed the reality that he had caused it! Adding to Stefan’s guilt was the realization that he was responsible for denying Chloe (whom he had grown to care about) much needed medication and medical attention.
Stefan paid a high price following the revelation that he was responsible for his “abduction” and Chloe’s kidnapping. For starters, Chloe wants nothing to do with the enigmatic Cassadine. He not only lied to her, but Stefan threatened Chloe’s life too! Likewise Laura is furious because Stefan hurt Nikolas and caused Luke to go on trial for his “death,” which inadvertently exposed Luke’s one night stand with Felicia. Meanwhile, Nikolas’ inability to forgive Stefan has been the cruelest blow of all. All of Stefan’s machinations have landed him right where some say he belongs- alone! But he feels justified in his actions. When Helena told Stefan that the game was over, he coldly responded, “If that’s true, then I have nothing left to lose.”
If that’s the case, luckily for the audience, Nichols’ greatest moments as the tortured Stefan are yet to come. The masterful Stefan Cassadine has only begun to prove to his loved ones that he deserves a second chance.
