‘Those Were the Days’

 2006

Some friends and I attended Wally’s event, “Those were the Days” on Saturday, June 3. (Benefiting the Kurth and Taylor foundation)

I had bought tickets months ago because a friend heard a lot of old Days stars were coming. I thought it might be fun to celebrate the 40th anniversary and hoped Stephen and/or Mary Beth might come, but I wasn’t banking on it. I bought the tickets before we even knew that Steve and Kayla were returning, back in February I think.

A little while ago, we heard that Stephen and/or Mary Beth might make an appearance and that got me excited. Well Stephen did show up, looking great. Judi Evans, Matt Ashford, J. Eddie Peck, and Steve Blackwood were the other actors who showed up. Jim Reynolds showed up to do a karaoke song midway through as well.

I was very impressed by Judi. She is such a sweetie, and she is lovelier in person (the camera doesn’t do her justice). Matt gave a great big hug –what a great guy! These were laid back, great people, who really knew how to make fans feel appreciated.

I have to say, I don’t remember all the details to post this time. I had a bit of a bad day on Saturday, which started with my car getting a flat on the busy 101 freeway, and having to wait 45 minutes just to call for service.

This summary may be a little disjointed…

Stephen came in later (as Wally said he would), but of course he had the longest line for autographs. Most people totally ignored the karaoke to stand in line for pics with him. He wanted to mingle around the tables, but fans were following him across the room.

He reminisced with Wally and Matt about all the crew on Days that was still there (behind the scenes people). Stephen answered questions about the upcoming story. They showed Wally, Matt and Stephen… the Men of Days SOU cover… from way back when. They all joked that “no wonder Charlie and Michael Weiss got series and we didn’t.”

News

The new writer situation is still up in the air, so no confirmation, YET.

Steve will not be a clown. He will be an orderly who wears buttons and gives one to Jack.

Kayla is coming home for Jenn and Frankie’s wedding.

Jack (w/Steve) kind of crash the party. (I missed something here, but I am not sure they are actually seen at the party, or that they stop the wedding.)

Someone asked SN if Stephanie is coming back. He said yes.

I asked Matt (at the Q&A before SN arrived) what it was like working with SN and MBE again, and he was so sweet in his answers. Said they raised the bar; from the actors to the directors, there is a new energy on the set and everyone wants to do their best work. (He credited them for that).

At some point that night, someone asked Stephen if he was going to try to sneak onto the Leno set when some person appeared (I didn’t hear the name they mentioned). It momentarily slipped his mind that the Leno show tapes right next door.

Then Stephen told this story…

He was in the parking lot and Jay Leno saw him and said, “Patch, you’re back!” Someone told Stephen that Jay should have Stephen on the show. He hasn’t been approached.

Wally sang an old Days/Justin “Give me Wings” song. Later he serenaded Judi. Steve Blackwood impressed with his voice. It was a nice laid back event.
