Transcript: Kayla’s jealous of Britta (2 scenes)

Aired August 26, 1986

Background: Prior to this scene Steve and Britta had a night together. In the morning Britta was
taking pictures of Steve’s tattoo. In this scene she is in the bathroom and a shirtless Steve is making
the bed. There is a knock on the door.

Kayla: Steve? It’s me Kayla. Wake up its important.

S: What is it?

He’s about to put his shirt on.

K: It’s about Frankie

He throws the shirt on the bed and moves to the stairs.

S: What’s the matter with him? Is he in trouble?

K: If you open the door I’ll explain.

Steve opens the door and Kayla enters and goes down the stairs.

S: Oops, Sorry I wasn’t decent.

Kayla crosses the room and doesn’t see Britta exit from the bathroom

S: Is he hurt?

K: I don’t know, but he didn’t come…

She sees Britta. Britta, clad in only a black teddy, gives Kayla a smug look as she crosses the room to stand
between Steve and Kayla to get her clothes. Kayla looks embarrassed as she puts it all together.

Britta: Hello, Kayla

Steve is amused and has to look around Britta to keep Kayla’s attention.

S: Well, go on

A flustered Kayla can’t stop looking at Britta

K: As I was saying…. Uh….

S: Frankie. Frankie.

K: Frankie, right. Frankie. I’m worried about him. He didn’t come home last night.

S: He didn’t come home last night? What about Max?

Britta turns her back to Steve faces Kayla and smiles very smugly before taking her clothes to the bathroom.
Both of them watch her exit. Kayla is still flustered.

K: Max… um… is fine. It’s just when my mother went to wake up Frankie it didn’t look like…

Steve is going through his wallet

K: He hadn’t slept in it all night and I was just hoping that maybe you would know where he was.

S: Now why would I know that?

K: I don’t know. He seems to trust you. I even thought maybe he spent the night here last night
(she says this last part slowly knowing that he didn’t)

Steve gives her a self-satisfied sort of look.

S: No he didn’t spend the night here.

Britta comes out of the bathroom buttoning her shirt.

K: No I guess he didn’t.

Kayla looks at Britta quickly then says: Good-bye Britta. Steve. Kayla dashes up the stairs, out the door
and shuts it behind her. Steve laughs as he puts his shirt on.

B: What’s so funny?

S: Oh, nothin’, baby. I gotta get outta here.

B: Something wrong?

S: No, you just lock the door before you go.

B: Right

She looks disappointed that he’s leaving. He dashes up the stairs and out the door, but before the door
shuts he yells: Kayla! And Britta looks upset.

****************************************

Kayla is on the lower dock, pacing and looking a little upset.

S: (funny voice) Nurse Brady!

Steve jumps down from the upper level.

S: Woo!

Kayla turns and looks at him but says nothing.

S: You are Nurse Brady, aren’t you?

K: (disgusted) Excuse me.

She turns to walk away but he grabs her arm then moves to stand in front of her.

S: No. Not until you tell me why you rushed out of my place so quick.

K: I wanted to start looking for Frankie. OK? Can I go?

She tries to pass but he stops her.

S: Nooo. Is that the reason?

He has a cat that ate the canary smile on. She looks miffed that she has to have this conversation with him.

K: Yes.

S: Naaah. Come on Kayla. I saw those pretty little cheekies blush when you saw that beautiful woman in
my place. (His voice gets huskier) That beautiful sexy woman.

Kayla’s state of miffed-ness intensifies.

K: Don’t be ridiculous.

S: And didn’t I detect a hint of jealousy there too?

K: Oh, don’t flatter yourself, Steve.

S: I’m just tellin’ you what I saw, Sweetness.

K: Well, maybe you need to have your eyesight checked.

S: Uhuh

K: You think I care who you got in that room?

S: I think maybe you do.

K: Look. I have better things to do. Like find Frankie.

She tries to walk past him, but he moves to stop her.

S: All by yourself?

K: I can handle it.

S: You can? Now wasn’t it just about five minutes ago a young woman named Kayla was bangin’ on my door
beggin’ for my help?

K: I was not begging. And even if I needed your help you obviously had better things to do.

Steve smiles and nods. Frankie shows up and they deal with him. After Frankie leaves Steve and Kayla talk
some more and end with:

S: This may come as a shock to you sweet heart, but being a part of Salem’s Brady bunch isn’t the answer to
every kid’s prayer.

K: Why am I wasting my time talking to you? I mean how can I possibly expect you to understand anything
about caring and warmth?

S: That’s right baby, I’m an iceberg, aren’t I?

K: Because to care about somebody you need to have a little bit of human kindness. Some sensitivity. You
happen to be lacking greatly in both of those things.

Steve’s tone changes to a softer one.

S: I’m chock full of human kindness and sensitivity. It’s just that I’m afraid.

Kayla looks concerned but wary.

K: Afraid of what?

S: I’m afraid of intimacy. Afraid of getting close.

He puts a hand on either side of her neck.

S: I want to learn how to love. (He breaks into a big smile) Are you givin’ lessons Nurse Brady? (Sticks his tongue
waaaaay out)

She knocks his hands away and he laughs. She hits him in the stomach with her purse.

K: From what I saw in your apartment this afternoon, I don’t think you’d have time to fit me into your schedule.

S: Oooooooooooo.

Kayla blushes.

K: I mean

S: I know what you meant, baby, and I’m flattered. You’re jealous aren’t you?

K: (ticked) I am NOT jealous

S: You’re not jealous?

K: No!

S: Good. Because guess what. I’m too much man for one woman. Whatever you want from me, baby, you can take it.

K: What ever you’re offering Steve

S: Uhuh

K: You can keep it.

She gives him a shove before running up the stairs. Steve has a look on his face like he wished he had n’t
just said the things he did.
