Transcript: Valentine’s Day 1990

(The morning before Kayla’s trial–accused of murdering Marina)

S: Where are you? Where are you? (Laughs), ok, over here now

K: (wakes up, confused) Steve…?

S: Good morning baby (kisses her belly)

K: What are you doing?

S: Playing with the tiny one, hide and go seek

K: (smiles) Right before the crack of dawn, it’s not even born yet. What time is it? (looks at alarm clock and panics)

K: Steve, Why did you let me sleep so late?

S: I wanted to play…

K: Ya but the trial is this morning

S: Let them wait

K: I can’t do that, you know I can’t do that

S: Hey, I’ve got something very important to take care of today (points to his lips) Come on…

K: (kisses him, wondering what he is up to)

S: Happy Valentine’s day. (smiles)

K: (Smiles)..Steve

They kiss

Jumps back in bed with a present, just as Kayla is trying to get out of bed

S: Noooo. nope, nope, nope, nope

Shows her a heart shaped gift box

K: Steve, I have to get up….

S: Not until you open this….

K: Come on, I really have to get up

S: Hey, what’s the problem?

K: It’s very sweet of you but I really have to…

S: Hey, Do you have something against Valentine’s day all of a sudden?

K: No…

S: No?? No? Let me just check this out (puts his mouth on the belly, talks to her belly) Hey do you think your mama should have a Valentine’s gift on Valentine’s day? (squeaks as if the baby is talking) “Yes”.

Kayla rests her face in his hair, then strokes his hair.

S: That was a yes

K: I can’t argue with both of you

S: Come on, open it

K: Steve…it’s a baby bracelet..(whispers) It’s beautiful.

S: Mmm hmm.. see we can put the baby’s name and birthdate in there

K: Names, we haven’t thought of the names yet

S: Don’t worry, I’ve been working on it

K: You have?

S: Yes, let’s see here. Here we go, I got the list. (pulls one out of his back pocket)

K: (reads the list) Little Walter, Levi, Babalu…

S: Babalu Johnson (laughs)

K: Lightning?? (laughs)

S: Lightning and Howlin’. Howlin’ Johnson.

K: What kinds of names are these?

S: They’re blues names baby…(laughs). Now if it’s a girl we can name her Big Mama. Big Mama Johnson.

(they both laugh)

K: Holds his face. You know, you’re the only person who could make me laugh today.

S: So sweet. Tell you what I want you to do. When you go to court today, you hold onto this, and think about all the good things we’ve got

K: (whispers) We do have a lot of good things don’t we?

S: Yes ma’am.

(They kiss and hug)
