Steve didn’t exactly quote Shakespeare, and Kayla often had to fight to get him to admit his feelings. They showed their love for each other in their own inimitable and special ways. Steve and Kayla’s words , quoted below, only reveal a hint of the level of passionate emotion in their story.

(Later on Bo walks in the room and hears them arguing. Bo gloats that Kayla is finally listening to him about Steve not being right for her. Kayla tells Bo and Steve off)
Kayla: Bo you’re no different than he is. You’re as stubborn and bitter as Steve. No wonder you two were such good friends. You deserve each other.
Bo: Wait a minute, wait a minute, I was just trying to help. I was looking out for your interests…
Kayla: You can stop looking out for my interests Bo, both of you can. You can stop trying to run my life. You both think you know everything about me, that you know what’s best for me. Well I have news for you, neither one of you has a clue about what’s best for me, or what I need.
(She looks at Bo and says) You ‘ve got me confused with some ten year old
(Faces Steve) And you, you think I am some china doll that is just going to shatter if you touch me! Well I am not fragile. And I don’t appreciate either one of you appointing yourselves guardian of my life!

Steve: What do you see in me?
Kayla: Boy, you…you really dive right in, don’t you…I mean at slumber parties we usually wait ’til midnight….
Steve: Well, you haven’t been to the slumber parties I go to, baby. At those parties you don’t ask questions….come on…we got a plane to catch.
Kayla: ….I see a man I would trust with my life…I don’t care what you say, Steve, or how flip you want to be about it. I see someone who has a very, very good soul. I also see someone who has been burned so many times in his life he’s afraid to get close to the fire.

Kayla was upset over Marlena’s death and Steve’s sudden hostile attitude toward her wasn’t helping her feel better. She tells him off.
“I care about you Steve…I care about you a lot, and you are making a big mistake turning your back on me, because I am the best thing that ever happened to you!”
(Later, Kayla tearfully explained to Steve why she wanted to stop wasting time with arguing).
“You know, the last few days all I could think about was Roman and Marlena and of how happy they always were…now Roman’s alone. But nothing can ever take away that wonderful time they spent together. And all of a sudden I realized…maybe once in your whole life something really special like that comes along…and then, poof, out of nowhere it’s just gone! Steve we have a shot at something really special here and I don’t think we should just throw it away…I think that’s stupid and I just don’t want to do it!”
Finally, Steve finally stopped trying to push Kayla away and admitted:
“I care about you Kayla… and I want you!”
(That’ s all Kayla needed to hear before she went in to her family home to discuss Marlena’s death. Alone outside, Steve looked scared and vulnerable .)

Kayla sees that Steve’s bags are packed, and asks him if he is going somewhere. They get in a heated argument that ends with Kayla revealing a little more than she meant to…
Steve: What kind of a weird fantasy do you have about me, Kayla? Do you think there’s some kind of Knight in Shining Armor who is just dying to get out, is that it?
Kayla: NO! That’s not it at all…
Steve: Look at me Kayla!
Kayla: It’s not how you look, it’s how you are!
Steve: Why don’t you ask Roman and Bo and …
Kayla: I don’t care about Roman! I don’t care about Bo!…I thought I made that clear in Stockholm. I have a mind of my own and a heart of my own and I will give my heart to whoever I want!

At the hearts motel, Steve told Kayla she had saved his life 3 times on their trip-once from a snake bite (in the woods) and once from a bear (on a cliff). She asks him what the third time was.
Steve: “I think I was talking about the day I met you”.

Steve and Kayla are still on the run after he’s been set up to shoot Harper. Kayla sees Steve make a phone call and worries that he is up to something and holding back on her.
(In conversation, Steve starts reminiscing about Stockholm.)
“I remember I was in that hotel room with Hope, had that bullet in my shoulder. I didn’t know she’d called you. I guess it was the next day…I’ll never forget that door flying open and you standing there. I was never so happy to see anyone in my whole life”
(Kayla knows it’s not like Steve to reminisce so openly with her. She knows he is planning to do something without her and she is upset/crying.)
Kayla: How can you do this?
Steve: What am I doing?
Kayla: You’re pushing me away again..
Steve: No, I’m not…
Kayla: What does it take to get close to you?
Steve: I’ve let you get closer to me than anyone, ever, in my whole life…

Steve and Kayla wake up in her bedroom the morning after they made love for the first time.
Kayla: “It was wonderful”
Steve: “You know why?”

Kayla (who is still sick after being poisoned) escapes from the hideout, and she is missing (Professor Schenkel found her passed out the pier). Steve is frantically looking for her. Marcus is with him when Steve breaks down in tears, saying:

So right now you see, no matter how sick she is, somewhere in the back of her mind she’s thinking of me. She knows that I’m there for her, she’s counting on me. But I’m at a dead end. I don’t know where to go, I don’t know where to look. Marcus, man, if she dies, I die! ….”

And I knew I would never amount to a hill of beans. But now when I look in the mirror I see the man Kayla loves. That makes me special….If you left I wouldn’t have any reason to go on living. Kayla gets drunk, and Steve takes her home. She starts stripping her clothes off. Steve doesn’t know what to do, and Kayla is really trying to tempt him to stay. She starts unbuttoning her shirt but can’t get one of the buttons undone.

Later in the same episode, Kayla and Steve start making out. Steve stops and insists he has to go home and take a cold shower. Kayla offers to go with him..

Kayla: I understand.
Steve: (still chuckling with nervous tension) Come on in. I was just gettin’ myself undressed. (stops laughing) Feel free to join me.
