Friendship

There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship.
~Saint Thomas Aquinas

In honor of my pal Carol’s birthday this week, I am doing something a bit different for the weekly blog. Unlike all our past blogs, this one has nothing to do with Steve & Kayla, or Stephen & Mary Beth, or heck, even soaps in general. This week’s blog is about life, and more specifically about friendship. Anyone who knows me knows what a huge fan I am of ‘I Love Lucy,’ hence my choice of the above clip as what I hope is a worthy tribute to someone I consider a wonderful and true friend.

Now, most of us know Carol and we know she is not one to seek attention or revel in praise. In fact, her irritating modesty is one of her most endearing traits. So I have no doubt this blog will have to be posted when she is not around or she will insist I take it down.

I first got to know Carol a little over two years ago, quite literally by accident. Back in those days I was not at all a fan fic reader. I never even went into that section of the forum because I didn’t think it would ever be something that would appeal to me. But one day I noticed this title “Wanted” that kept popping up in the most recent topics and I became curious. Actually, I thought ‘who is this yahoo that thinks she can write a halfway believable cowboy story featuring Steve and Kayla as the main characters?’

So I clicked on the link and entered the world of fan fic addiction. By then the story was on chapter 10 I believe, and I was completely riveted through every single chapter. I was dumbfounded for a number of reasons, mostly that it had taken me so long to discover the story, and also because I couldn’t believe that this wawame gal was not a professional writer.

Though I remained a silent stalker in the beginning, it didn’t take me long to jump in and start begging for updates along with everyone else. Somewhere around chapter 14, when Kayla was attempting to bring down Steve’s fever from the knife wound, I was so enthralled with the story I simply had to PM the author and tell her how much I loved her story. And that is where the friendship was born.

She responded to me with a laugh and said it was actually my banner that had inspired her story. She had been trying to come up with a fan fic story idea and had been perusing people’s banners for inspiration. At that time I was using the “Cowboy Up” banner which had been made at my request by the lovely and talented Sweetness1975. And of course my screen name at that time was giddyupcowgirl, so it was only fitting that I have cowboy Steve as my signature.

Carol thanked me for my vocal support of her story, and of course went on and on about how she didn’t deserve so much praise for doing something that came naturally to her. Um okay, so writing a story worthy of being published comes naturally and there is no need for kudos? Yeah, whatever Carol.

Anyway, from that moment forward a wonderful friendship blossomed. I have come to understand, through Carol’s unwavering devotion, what it is to have a true friend. Carol and I just ‘get’ each other, for lack of a better word, and I am forever thankful that she is a part of my life. Our trust in each other is beyond reproach and our bond is unbreakable. It baffles me on some level that such a close friendship could have been borne in such a non-traditional way, and yet I don’t question it, I just give thanks for it.

So as you celebrate your….um….40ish birthday this week Carol, I want you to know how much you mean to me, and to a lot of other people. I know the ladies on RTM would agree wholeheartedly that you are truly one of a kind in your talent, humor, dignity, professionalism, devotion and attitude. You are what makes RTM such a special place and I dare say you are the cornerstone of its success.

Happy Birthday!!….Oh, and what about that ‘Wanted’ update you have been promising since Monday???

Wonderful blog, Giddy.
Happy Birthday Carol. You are the greatest. Your support, your kind words and your encouragement have meant the world to me. I can honestly say that you are the only reason that I ever attempted to write my first billet and only after you assured me that it was “good enough”, did you take the time to add the picture and post it for me. I can never tell you how much that meant to me. Thank you for wonderful talent and all the hard work that you do. ((HUGS))

Giddy, I could take your name of your blog and subsitute my own in so many ways. Sure, the details would need to be changed, but the end result is very close! I unfortunately have not had the pleasure to know Carol as long as Giddy, but her description of Carol and the praise she bestows could not be more accurate.

I actually came upon Wanted a bit backwards. When I first began reading ff, I read Wanted Love first and then read the original Wanted (just an fyi, Carol, each story stands on its own because I was not lost in the least!). Like Giddy, I could not believe this person was not a professional author; the story was better than most I had bought in bookstores!

When I began writing my own story, I will never forget the pride I felt when Carol took the time to compliment me. Carol, you will never know how much that meant to me. I do consider you the master and for you to compliment my writing was amazing to me.

When RTM first launched, I was like a kid in a candy store…all the FF was sooooo cool! I don’t think I accomplished anything for over a week as I read billets, sig stories and updates to my favorite ff’s of all time! (Giddy, I had found HOC by then and was reading on your blog).

I have had the pleasure over the last few months to not only play in RTM’s playground (that’s what it is to me) but to get to know Carol on a more personal level. She is absolutely everything Giddy says she is. She’s the most humble, kind, thoughtful and considerate person you could ever meet (despite the accent, Carol…lol). I consider myself lucky to have developed the friendship I have with her.

Have the happiest of birthday’s Carol. I wish you all the best. You deserve no less.

(I just wish I had a birthday treat or two to share!!!)

Happy Birthday!!!!

Happy Birthday Carol! And how did I not know???? I agree wholeheartedly with Giddy when it comes to the topic of her blog this week. I think many of our first encounters with Carol came as a result of her “Wanted” fanfiction. Each chapter brought more fans to her story. And as a result, we now have this wonderful website to spend our time with friends we’ve made online and acquaintances that share our love for Steve and Kayla. Again Carol, Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday Carol, and let me second…or is it third? What these ladies have said. I think you are a truly wonderful person and a fantabulous writer. I also have had the pleasure of reading your amazing story ‘Wanted’ and I have to say, that I was just blown away by your story. Your writing is so incredibly vivid and descriptive. The emotion you bring to your characters, whether that be passion, anger or humor is just spot on.You have a way of making your readers feel as if they are right there alongside each character in that wonderfully fictional town you’ve dreamed up in your incredibly vivid imagination, and that my friend takes talent. Pure raw talent.

You truly are an incredibly talented writer,Carol and I can’t thank you enough for all that you’ve given us here at RTM. It’s an amazing sight, one that I thoroughly enjoy and very much appreciate.

I’ve said this to you before and I’ll say it again. You truly are my idol and when I grow up I want to write just like you! You my friend,in my opinion, are and always will be the queen of fan fiction.

Happy Birthday!!!!!
Lori

I too remember when I first found the “Wanted” stories. Actually reading them made me a little sad and it wasn’t because of what Cowboy Steve and his Kayla were going through. You see, my grandpa,my dad and I used to read Louis L’amour books and short stories and talk about them over the phone. We started when I was quite young. When I first read Wanted, the characters, setting and some of the conflicts reminded me of the stories I shared with my dad and grandpa. Until I happened upon Carol’s story, I hadn’t thought about a cowboy story for years. Later, when my son was looking for a book to read and I dug out a couple of the old paper backs and we read them together. I would have read him “Wanted”, but I may have had to skip a few chapters. So Carol’s story led me to share with my son literature that years ago I shared with my dad and grandpa. I’ll end there before some one starts to sing “The Circle of Life”.

Giddy, thanks for your blog in honor of your dear friend’s birthday. It gives me a chance to say thank-you to Carol.

Thanks Carol for your story and for who you are.

Many happy returns on the day!

Happy Birthday Carol! Great Blog Giddy! While I am not a fan fic reader per say, Carol has so many other talents that shine through that make her so easy to get along with. I have had the pleasure of working with her this year and it has been a fun ride! So happy birthday Carol and many more.

I have been slow and reluctant to come here and leave a comment, simply because every time I see this blog and the comments given, I cry. Giddy blindsided me, and it is undoubtedly one of the nicest things anyone has ever done to me in my lifetime. Saying thank you just doesn’t seem to be enough, yet I don’t know what else to say. Thank you.

Like the blog itself, the comments that have been left here will forever be burned in my memory and my heart. You have humbled me. I cannot thank you enough, nor can I tell you how much I appreciate your kindness and willingness to give me credit for something I don’t deserve credit for. RTM, FTM, and all the fanfics and information found between the two are successful for only one reason, and that reason is because of the wonderful people who come here and post, read, share, and encourage. I am honored to share your company, and I am honored to share my birthday with such a warm and wonderful group of friends. Thank you again. You truly do leave me speechless.

And, in all honesty, thank Giddy for the ‘Wanted’ story. If not for her, it would have ended a long time ago. But, like our friendship, rest assured it will never end.

BTW… an update is in the works… if I can stop blubbering, that is… 😉
