One Year Ago Today…

~By Jen…

….we said goodbye to our beloved Steve and Kayla with no fan fare and little explanation as to where they went or why they left. It was a sad, sad day in the fandom known as Steve and Kayla. Not only was there no goodbye for them or from them, but we were led to believe that they would just pick up their preemie infant son and head across the world to some underprivileged country in Africa. Don’t they realize that Steve can’t wear his leather jacket in Africa?  As much as I believe that Steve and Kayla would indeed ride off to save the world together (or at least one village in Africa), I find it hard to believe or imagine Steve and Kayla being in some small unnamed village in a third world country. I guess our favorite couple had enough of being in the hospital, trying to support a distant daughter, dealing with a psychic brother, and living in the all around kooky town of Salem. It was just too much for them. They simply had to pack it up and head out of town. Who cares that they had a kidnapped daughter who desperately needed them, a brother and friend going through a tough time, or that Kayla was the Chief of Staff?  No matter. They simply weren’t needed.

In all seriousness, I continue to miss Steve and Kayla almost every day since that fateful day last year when they just disappeared into thin air. More importantly, I miss Mary Beth and Stephen. We recently got Stephen back on our screens, and strangely enough, we actually do get to see Mary Beth tonight on Nip/Tuck.  I still hold out hope that one day we will get to see the magic that is Mary Beth and Stephen together doing what they do best… entertaining us as the magical team they are.

Even though they got the shaft at Days, I would not give up one single moment of them returning to our screens as the iconic couple known as Steve and Kayla. They were reunited, they had a son, and they were happy. That is the prize in all of this. They are, and always will be, my all time favorite soap opera couple.

In the spirit of the anniversary of their last day.. let’s discuss where Steve and Kayla are right now.   What are they doing?  In short, just exactly where are Steve and Kayla in your mind?  Leave a comment. We would love to know your thoughts!

Their legend WILL live on….

Has it been a year already? It seems like yesterday to this fan. How can such a wonderful love story as Steve and Kayla, just be thrown away like yesterday’s trash? But like you, I’m happy in the fact that there was a ‘happlily ever after’ for them. Perhaps not the kind I would have chosen, but they’re together. I know Stephen has moved on to greener pastures, and our hope is for Mary Beth to do the same, but, if this couple graced my screen again as Steve and Kayla, I would be watching. I miss them.

I wouldn’t trade having Steve and Kayla back for the short amount of time we had them for the world. It was wonderful seeing these beloved actors and their beloved characters again and it was also worth it seeing Steve alive and reunited with his girls after so many horrible years apart. It really showed me that in the end true love wins and also the power of true love.

Even though we were deprived of a proper going away story line for our faves I believe that they are happily living in Central America with their miracle boy baby Joey and that they are happily running a clinic together. Kayla always needs her favorite assistant and that makes me happy that they are together and living the life that they were deprived of so many years ago. Even though their return to Days was short lived I loved seeing Stephen and Mary Beth again and now I am loving seeing Stephen on Y&R as Tucker. Good Times!!

You know, Steve and Kayla are the epitomy of the ultimate soap supercouple and nothing or no one can ever take their history away from them. I was shocked and saddened when I found out Stephen and Mary Beth had been fired, but as soon as I was able to move past my anger, I realized that it was probably for the best. Had they stayed on the show, I have little doubt they would have been destroyed. I would much rather imagine them living happily with Joe in some tiny Africa village (as ridiculous as that whole premise is…I will accept it)than to think of what might have happened to them had they stayed on Days.

And what a long year it has been…

IMO… Steve and Kayla, once satisfied that their work was done in the small, unheard of African village, have since moved back to Los Angeles. There, Kayla has returned to her position at LA General, and Steve has pursued his career as a private ‘eye’. Little Joe is lovingly tended to by both of his parents, though Steve is basically the primary caretaker, due to the demands of Kayla’s practice. They live in a roomy and posh condo, which is located just minutes away from the hospital. While Kayla continues to save lives on a daily basis, Steve has been involved with helping local and state law enforcement in exposing and bringing to justice several drug lords, gang leaders, and pirates in the entertainment industry. Joe will be ready for pre-school soon, and arrangements have already been made for him to attend the best available. Steve and Kayla are living the dream in LA, all while helping others do the same. They couldn’t be happier, and neither could Little Joe.

I only hope that in the grand scheme of things, they win the lottery, buy the rights to ‘Days of our Lives’, and fix what went so terribly wrong. Or, that they opt to change their names and move to Genoa City… together again.

Well, as someone who hasn’t watched a minute of the show since they left (and frankly couldn’t get thru a full episode when they were on…thank GOD for the clippers online!) I like to think of them as living a very quiet and happy life in the outskirts of Salem. Kayla is chief of staff at University, works 9-5 and comes home to her loving family each night. Steve works his P.I. business from home so he can be with his beautiful son and enjoy all those precious moments he missed with his first-born and is always available whenever she needs him.

I miss seeing them terribly, and would love to see them back, but not in the context of the current execs on the show now. I would want to see them as they were back in the day…completely in love and devoted to one another and their children above everything else. No love triangles, no doubts, no suspicions… That is the true relationship of Steve and Kayla.

From what I have heard the powers that be have done to other beloved characters on the show today, I am thankful beyond reason our favorite couple rode off into the sunset before they had a chance to be destroyed.

Steve and Kayla will always be my all-time favorite TV couple. There isn’t even a close second in my mind. We had them back for a short time, and even without the proper tribute, we know they are together and happy, whereever we envision them to be.

For 16 years, every time I watched my Steve and Kayla tapes, it was with a sad little ache, remembering the way they ended with Steve’s “death”. When they were going to be reunited onscreen in 2006, I had mixed emotions: While I was thrilled beyond belief that we might finally see a happy ending, I also knew that no writer from Days, would ever do them justice. Even worse, I feared, someone like Days’ James Reilly could even destroy the essence of those characters and their love story. James Reilly had already destroyed *everything* I ever loved about Days. And I had seen it happen before on other shows- GH’s Bob Guza destroyed everything I ever loved about Stefan, and Katherine (respectively and together). So when Steve and Kayla came back, I was more than a little frightened at the prospect.

There were some rough patches, some bad story from the likes of Reilly, Higley, and even Hogan at first…but in the end, we did get a beautiful reunion for our favorite couple. In the end, it was almost everything I could have dreamed of. (Though I still wanted to see them renew their vows in some intimate way).

I have to say, I am SO grateful for that. I can watch the early story now without that sad little ache. I can envision Steve and Kayla happily ever after. I admit though, still miss them SO much. They were such a bright light in my day.

But what really still stings, and probably always will is that Days didn’t even bother to write them off. That was disrespectful not only to the fans/viewers, but also to the history/legacy of the show, and to the actors who worked so hard to create these characters. They went off with a wimper, as if they didn’t matter enough to the show to have an ending story. Days doesn’t respect it’s own history, it’s own team of actors or its viewership. It’s no wonder that legions of fans and daytime viewers in turn have stopped caring.

If daytime wonders why ratings continue to decrease: take a look at Days as a prime example. As soon as you stop caring about the legacy of your show, as soon as you stop caring that the audience has an investment, the audience stops caring to watch. It’s really that simple.

PS I meant to add: I know where Steve and Kayla will always live on: In our hearts! And in some really great fan fics, I hope! lol

I too am not happy about the way they were written off Days. I haven’t watched the show since and like someone else mentioned I could barely watch the whole show when they were on. What has me completely baffled is how Days stays on the air. Guiding Light and As The World Turns had better writing in my opinion and now one is gone and the other is one they way out. Days starts so many different story lines and then never finishes them up. I think the writers must have ADHD. At least Stephen is on Y&R.

I watched the video and it took me to a place over 20 years ago. The magic that Stephen and Mary Beth created was heavenly.

I like to think of Kayla at a small hospital in Maine, where she is the Chief of Staff and Steve is a detective for the police department. Stephanie is also with her ‘Mama and Papa’, because she had to leave Salem because IT did hurt her when Phillip and mel were married. And Baby Joe is well being taken care of by his and Steph’s ‘Mama Jo’, who lives with them, when his parents are at work. I always did like Jo.

Steve and Kayla will ALWAYS be my TV favorite….hands down. And I hope I will see Stephen and Mary Beth together again…I really, really do.

The way in which they were written off was HORRIBLE, but the way they were told about it was even worse IMHO.

Show up to work all prepared to do what you do best then TIIC call you into their office and say, “By the by, this is your last day. Thanks and good luck.”

So I see Steve helping Kayla out in the hospital by cheering up all the little dudes and dudettes and keeping an eye on the baby. Maybe Steve sees a little orphaned guy who reminds him of Marcus and they decide to adopt him. That’s what I see.

It’s my FAVORITE mvid, for my all time FAVORITE couple EVER, ever, EVER! Primetime. Daytime. Movies. Doesn’t matter. For me, Steve and Kayla are IT!

I know, I know. Everyone feels that way about their special couple, right? None of us are unbiased about that. But I happen to think Steve and Kayla stayed true to the essence of who they were, even in the return.

Yes, the writing wasn’t thrilling. It wasn’t adventurous or fun. But Steve and Kayla were still Steve and Kayla. They loved each other in the best of ways. With passion, yes, but also with the friendship and understanding they showed each other, the support they always offered, the encouragement that they could always count on from each other.

What could be more special than that?

Now, as we look back a year to the day that we saw them for the last time, I join with all of you in being glad they returned. In spite of the less than perfect way their stories were written, we did get our reunion, and it was beautiful. We did get to see them laugh together and tease each other. We got to see them share their thoughts and dream new dreams. We even got to see them have another child and take back the live they’d been meant to live all those years ago that they were denied.

In the end, we came out ahead, and we can envision our Steve and Kayla together, and happy.

That’s worth it all to me.

For Stephen, who is now moving forward in a new role on Young and the Restless, and for Mary Beth, who’s finding joy in a role as a columnist/blogger for Hybrid Mom as well as being a businesswoman of note, I have only the highest hopes. May they find themselves happy and fulfilled in their separate projects, and may they know how much their fans have always appreciated them.

Oh how I miss Steve & Kayla, what a missed opportunity, but I am so gratefull that we got them back for the short amount of time we did.

Um lets see, Steve & Kayla are still dealing with the unresolved fallout from the whole Ava debarcle.
Kayla wrapped up her short stint in Africa and accepted a position running the Emergency Department at the busiest private hospital in Sydney Australia. But unbeknownst to KAyla, this hospital is funded by a consortium of anonymous wealthy business men, headed by none other than the evil EJ Dimera.
Behind the scenes, EJ silently pulls all the strings at this hospital like an evil puppet master and is wringing his black gloved hands in glee that his Brady loving ex soldier, Steve Johnson, will be within his grasp again, EJ has unfinished business with all the Bradys.
But Kayla is too busy with her new job to notice any strange goings-on at the hospital, she has her hands full dealing with the life and death emergencys that come through the hospital doors everyday.
Kayla is so happy to discover that one of her colleagues (Bill) from LA is also working at the hospital. KAyla is releived that there is no awkwardness between them (BIll came on pretty strong in LA & wanted to persue a romantic relationship with KAyla, but she was not interested at the time).
Unbeknownst to KAyla, Bill is BSC and hiding a dangerous obsession with the beautifull Dr Johnson & is about to put into motion a plan to win over the good Doctor & have her all to himself (If he cant have her, than noone will, insert BSC laugh).
Steve has settled in nicely in stunning Sydney, he has his own PI/bounty hunter business and is going great guns, having replaced the wild animals of Africa with the wild animals that inhabit Sydney’s seedy underbelly.
Steve also moonlights as a harmonica player in the coolest little blues band in town. Steve’s good friend Marcus, who also works with KAyla at the hospital, plays drums in the band.
The band is the perfect cover for Steve to mix with the more seedy side of town & he has made alot of contacts who assist him with his bounty hunting escapades.
Who knew that Sydney Australia was the hotspot for International criminals fleeing the long arm of the law.
Little Joe Johnson is no longer a baby, he is now a mischievous toddler who is the apple of his parents eyes/eye.
Unbeknownst to Steve & KAyla, their beautifull boy is the centerpiece of evil EJ’s diabolical plans to rip apart the lives of the Johnson family and continue his insatiable and neverending hatred of all things Brady.
Was that really just a freckle on baby Joe’s wrist? or something much, much, more sinister?
REmember brainwashed crazy Steve? well hang onto your seats folks, you aint seen nothing yet.
When EJ goes after little Joe and sets his diabolical plan in motion, an enraged Steve steps up to the plate and must be the hero that we all know he can be.
Nick Fallon was released from prision early and a damaged and cynical Nick has turned up in Sydney trying to escape his inner demons and rebuild his shattered life.
Chelsea Brady is visiting her Aunt Kayla and runs into Nick, imagine her shock ……………….
Jack Deveraux has just acquired a new newspaper, the Sydney Herald, he has been so successfull in London that he is expanding his newspaper empire rapidly and is considering moving his family to Sydney to concentrate on his new business acquisition.
Of course the fact that his brother now lives in Sydney is a huge drawcard and Jack longs to restablish a relationship with his big brother.
