Kenny’s Korner

dunceban-1-1-1-2-2-1.jpg picture by snandmbe

~By Giddy

SOD then asks Corday about the fact that Chappell and Kurth are returning while fan favorites were let go. Corday says that “it was a matter of choosing amongst three very powerful couples” and deciding which to keep on the show and play. Corday continues that “by the time this happens in September” John and Marlena will have been off the show for nine months, and “Patch and Kayla the same”. He says that the show did not decide to bring Carly back at the same time that John, Marlena, Patch and Kayla were written off. Corday continues that we shouldn’t “do a price check” because “John and Marlena and Patch and Kayla are not even in the same store.” He says further, “for the ardent John and Marlena and Patch and Kayla fans, great, you can still see them at their luncheons. That was then, this is now.”

Okay I admit it…I do tend to carry a grudge. It’s been almost a full year since Ken Corday gave the infamous Soap Opera Digest interview and I still get pissy when I think about it. I won’t even get into the “luncheon” comment, because well…that comment was so unbelievably insulting to fans I believe it stands on its own and requires no further elaboration.

I think the reason I have once again found myself dwelling on this interview has to do with what has been going on over at Days for the past several months. I freely admit that I have not watched a single second of the show since February 2009. For that reason I am not going to get into anything related to the current stories, the writing, the ratings or the direction of the show that I once loved so much.

Instead I want to focus on this profound pearl of wisdom given to us by Corday: “That was then, this is now.” Even without reading the article, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what Kenny is talking about in that little blurb. He is referring to the recent firings of Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans (Steve & Kayla) as well as Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall (John & Marlena), and he is defending his decision by basically telling the fans to suck it up and get over it. In Corday’s opinion, fans need to realize that, while S&K and J&M may be two of the greatest supercouples in Days’ history, they are the past. So what if they were popular in the 80s? This is 2009 and fans need to accept the fact that Days is not what it used to be. No Ken, unfortunately for longtime viewers, it’s not.

So why is this still bothering me after all this time? I think after going through the various stages: shock (“I cannot believe he actually said that”) to denial (“No, he did not just say that”) to anger (“The nimrod said it and he meant it”) to acceptance (“Okay, so he obviously doesn’t care about the fans”), I had thoroughly and completely moved on. Whew! No more messing with my DVR and no more rushing home after to work to watch that day’s episode.

But then peculiar things started happening. We started hearing a rumor that Crystal Chappell was returning. Wait, wasn’t Carly on a really long time ago, like back in the late 80s and early 90s? Oh, I remember now. She shared a lot of scenes with Kayla at the emergency center, and with Steve during the Riverfront Raider story. Steve and Kayla? I guess they weren’t busy at any luncheons during that time.

Soon after, we heard that Louise Sorel was coming back too. Hmmm, oh yeah, Vivian Alamain. I liked her a lot…when she started on the show back in 1992. I think Kayla was still there at that time, even though Steve was presumed dead by then.

But wait, there’s more. Soon we were hearing that Wally Kurth was coming back too! Wally played Justin Kiriakis from 1987 to 1991. I remember when he helped Steve and Kayla when they were on the run after Steve accidentally shot Senator Deveraux. That was such a great story that encompassed so many different characters. Those 80’s stories really rocked! Of course during that time Justin also established a relationship with Adrienne Johnson, Steve’s sister played so wonderfully by Judi Evans from 1986 to 1991. Oh, did I forget to mention that Judi has come back to Days as well?

Yikes! I almost forgot to mention Anna Dimera, played by the beautiful and charming Leanne Hunley. I loved her from 1982 to 1986 and I still think she is fabulous. Unfortunately they killed off Tony (Thaao Penghlis) for the 10th time last year, as Tanna and their fans became yet another casualty of the peculiar and unexplainable anti-supercouple mentality that has taken over at Days.

Finally, it has recently been confirmed that Arleen Sorkin will be returning as the zany Calliope Jones, a character she played from 1984 to 1990. Rumor has it John de Lancie (Eugene, 1982 to 1986) has been asked to return as well. Calliope had a lot of humorous interaction with Steve and Kayla. Who could forget the naughty present she gave Kayla at her wedding shower? Such good times back in the 80’s!

It makes me wonder if Corday remembers that Steve and Kayla’s wedding in 1988 was the only time Days was #1 in the daytime ratings since 1974, and hasn’t been number one since. How ironic that Stephen Nichols is now on the #1 rated ‘The Young and the Restless’ as Tucker McCall, and if many longtime fans get their wish, Mary Beth Evans will soon be following him there. I would love to see what Maria Arena Bell, Paul Rauch and Hogan Sheffer could do with two of the finest actors in daytime on such a beautifully written and produced show. I would call that sweet comeuppance for two wonderful actors (and their fans) who were treated so horribly by a show to which they gave so much.

I want to make it clear that I am not complaining about any of the above mentioned actors/characters. They are all popular in their own right, and all have large and devoted fan bases and I respect that very much. In fact, I am actually happy for you. I am happy that each and every fan of each actor listed above gets to see your favorite on screen as much as possible. Personally, I like all the characters I have mentioned and I have lots of great memories of all of them from years past. Beyond that, I certainly don’t begrudge anyone a paycheck in this tough economy.

This blog is not about who has the biggest fan base or what characters deserve to be on the canvas at Days. It is about honesty and integrity and it’s about treating your customers with a little bit of respect. As fans, we are essentially the customers of the shows we watch. Aside from “preferred demographics” and “Nielson households,” the nitty gritty of it is that without us, there would be no show. Fans should be appreciated and catered to, not patronized and dismissed as if we are a group of ungrateful and demanding peons who need to sit back and accept whatever is dished out to us without question.

If someone is fired because there are personality conflicts or because they stand up for the history and integrity of their characters, then say that. Don’t gloss over it with some cloak and dagger nonsense about “budget cuts” and “that was then, this is now.” Especially when your actions and decisions for the next year contradict everything you just said in a public forum for the world to see.

At that point, you have not only lost fans, but you have lost respect and authority as well. You are called names like “putz” and “nimrod” and “tool” (as well as several others that can’t be printed here) by the very people you are there to serve.

In the end, I don’t suppose I will ever be able to reconcile in my mind what Ken Corday meant by “that was then, this is now” because to this 80’s Days fan, the “now” is looking more and more like the “then”…minus one of the greatest supercouples of all time.

Sherry S. - March 31, 2010 - 9:52 am

Nicely said Giddy! It’s a shame that Ken Corday doesn’t follow his own standards. For those of us that were fans of supercouples, with supercouples being no longer fashionable, it’s hard to stomach the returns of “past” characters. I’m not sure if Ken Corday feels as though we’ve all forgotten his words of wisdom, “that was then, this is now.” But I haven’t…and I’m also one of those fans that continues to hold a grudge. I have not watched, nor will I watch Days in the future. Gratefully, Stephen has moved on to the #1 rated soap and I couldn’t be happier for him…it’s where he belongs. My only hope is that Mary Beth meets up with him in Genoa City…because she also belongs on the #1 rated soap.

Mary - March 31, 2010 - 10:57 am

Excellent job Giddy! You have put into words what so many of us having been feeling for over a year now. I also have not watched Days since February 2009. (However, I do intended to watch the tribute to Frances Reid. I am also excited about seeing MBE again, even if only for a brief time.) I don’t believe any fan of SN/MBE or DH/DH will ever forget those words that he so callously spoke. The only consolation I find to these words is the fact the ultimately they will come back to haunt him. “This is now.” His “now” is trying to re-create the magic of Days from the 80’s and early 90’s without the heart of the show – the supercouples. We all know that without the heart, you will not survive. My heart has moved on and in my eyes, our “now” is that we have SN back on our screen, working hard, and doing an excellent job at Y&R.

Miahappy - March 31, 2010 - 11:13 am

I went thru the stages as well. Although it took time, I thought I was getting past the bitterness and anger. What is happening on the show today has caused it all to come back and I now feel I need to go through the stages of grief all over again.

The worst part about hearing the news of old characters coming back is the HUGE lost potential for unlimites stories that could be told. What would have happened if SnK were on at the same time as Vivienne and Carly (remember, Lawrence was responsible for Steve’s ‘demise’ not Stefano). What could have happened if Adrienne and Justin were there when Steve came back. These were characters from the show’s heyday and they could have brought a specialness back to the show that is SORELY lacking these days.

Back in the day, each character’s storyline interceded at one point with another’s, sometimes multiple storylines reached their peak in one exciting climax. These days, you’re lucky if the stories even end…sometimes they just drop them (baby Joe being kidnapped and injected by Stefano, anyone?) It’s like the writers are unble to form complex thoughts. They’re better off writing for one character at a time (Sami…Sami…Sami….Sami…) as opposed to multiple storylines….

I am still shocked and amazed at the lack of appreciation and concern Corday shows his viewers. It’s like “Screw ’em. They don’t know what they really like. We’ll show them what is good, wheher they like it or not.” You would think if you have characters that are popular enough to want to be seen by fans outside the show, that my be an indicator they want to be seen ON the show!!!! Let’s not even mention the endless cards, letters, and phone calls!

This is one former fan who will not watch Days again. Not worth the emotional investment! Guess what, Kenny-boy. “That was then…this is now!”

Dawn - March 31, 2010 - 12:02 pm

I’m not one to hold grudges either but this statement by Corday was way past insulting to me. He has the gall to say something like that then turn around and bring back other vets. He had the perfect vets when he had J&M and S&K. I have absolutely no emotional investment in any of these vets he’s bringing in. GRR! I’ve seen just a bit of the show because I’ve wanted to see what the idiots were going to do with Bo and Hope with Carly coming back to town and I’m absolutely horrified and totally offended because they’ve turned a wonderful character like Bo Brady into nothing more than a guy who would rather sleep with his old girlfriend and shack up with her in the house he shared with Hope than try to work on his marriage and take care of his daughter, who by the way is still traumatized over her kidnapping. Bo has become a joke of a character in my eyes and that’s painful to say because I really loved that character almost as much as I loved the Steve character. I can’t believe that this joke of a show was renewed through 2011. Why don’t they just put everyone out of their misery and end it already? All it is now is a daytime version of the Sopranos. SHEESH!!

wawame - March 31, 2010 - 12:58 pm

In the world of fools, Corday is king. How anyone can think it is a wise business decision to alienate a core group of ‘customers’, much less a multitude of them, is beyond baffling. The legacies of Steve & Kayla, Bo & Hope, John & Marlena, Tony & Anna, Kim & Shane, Jack & Jennifer, among others, are what made ‘Days’ a success. But somewhere down the line, someone decided that the supercouple aspect of the show needed ‘fixing’ (i.e. to be destroyed). I still wonder why the very thing that propelled the show to greatness is now something TPTB are intent on eradicating. Bitter? Yes, I am. I tend to be when treated rudely and made to feel as if my years of viewership meant nothing. How ironic is it that Corday feels the need to bring back all the characters from ‘then’, instead of focusing solely on the ones he has ‘now’? Maybe he realizes that’s where the ratings will come in. Then again, maybe he’s planning a big luncheon. Good luck with that.

Kathy - March 31, 2010 - 10:43 pm

Yes, I remember that interview well. You know, we were still trying to deal with the fact that Stephen and Mary Beth were fired, and that our beloved Steve and Kayla were gone forever, and then that interview was published and it was so disrespectful not only to the actors, but also to their fans, it made it impossible for me to care about the show anymore. I might have continued watching for Bope had it not been for the realization that Corday was such an out-of-touch jackass. He made it impossible for me to give a damn about Days anymore, and as someone who had watched since 1986, that is very sad.

I am grateful that Stephen is on Y&R now, and I am one who would love to see Mary Beth there as well. Regardless of whether their characters ever interacted, I would just like to see Mary Beth have the chance to be on such a wonerfully written show.

Thank you for taking the time to write this blog. I agree with everything you said!

LizK - April 1, 2010 - 12:02 am

Great blog Giddy. Corday couldn’t care less about fans or the show…so obvious, to so many that he lost all sense two decades ago.

Jen - April 6, 2010 - 12:05 pm

Wonderful blog! I know I am late to the game here, but I so agree with you on everything. It’s hard to imagine that a “President” per say of a company would alienate that many of his consumers by statements like “you can see them at their luncheons”. I just don’t get Corday and I don’t think I ever will, I don’t know him. But, I do know he makes the most insane statements I have ever seen a Executive Producer make about his own show. I know shows and soaps in general HAVE to move forward, it’s just natural, but also have some respect for the fans and consumers that put them where they are in the first place. It’s one thing to just write off our favorites, but it was done with such disrespect that it is really really hard NOT to be bitter about it, that’s human.

Confessions of a FanFic Writer

pinup3ban-3.jpg picture by snandmbe

~By wawame

He was the epitome of masculinity, a foreboding figure that could make a woman swoon with a simple wink of his eye. His hat was dipped low and his duster barely hid his snug fitting jeans. Even with the moonlight as his backdrop, the light from the oil lamps highlighted his handsome face, drawing attention to his patch. So sensual was the patch, it made him seem so forbidden, so mysterious, so secretive. He was a man that demanded attention, one who demanded respect… whether he meant to or not. It was the mere sight of him that took her breath away.

Now that I have your attention, let’s chat.

Do you sometimes wonder if today’s soap writers have ever written fan fiction?  Do you wonder if they have ever dabbled in writing a story or two about their preferred set of characters and, if given free reign, how they would like to see that story play out on screen?  Scary thought, I must admit, but I’d read it.  I’d read it in a heartbeat.

It would be interesting to see what Maria Arena Bell, Dena Higley… Hogan Sheffer, Tom Casiello, or Gary Tomlin for that matter… would write.  Which characters would they choose to focus on?  Just how deep would they divulge into the psyche of those characters, and how far would they take those characters in the acts and expressions of their love?  Would they write those characters as proverbial soul mates, always finding their way back into the arms of the only one who truly loves them and accepts them for who they are?  Or would their’s be a merry-go-round… an endless array of attempted and failed relationships that begin with profound professions of love, only to end with broken hearts that hinted of hatred, or worse yet, indifference?  Would they redefine them… dare to tear apart what endeared them to so many?  No doubt, their’s would be an interesting read.  It would be very telling to read their interpretations of our favorite characters, especially if those interpretations weren’t tainted by the ever present issue of ratings, ad revenues, desired demographics, contract negotiations, and tight budgets.  Such stories would answer many a question, especially since every fan of a particular character or couple would stand to either have their hopes dashed, or their dreams come true.

Fan fiction writers are a rare breed, especially those who write stories of romance.  Character stories that center on drama or action and adventure are a challenge in themselves, but the ones that center on true and romantic love are nothing short of daunting.  All rely heavily on imagination, but those that include romance and intimacy expose so much more of the writer.  It takes a lot of courage to write such a fanfic, and it takes even more to share it.  Thank goodness there are those who do.

I can only imagine how difficult it would be for a soap opera writer to pen a romance for the viewing audience, but I know for a fact how terrifying it is for a fanfic writer to post that first chapter, much less post their first attempt at a love scene, be it chaste or erotic… if they so opt to include one.  Someone once said that writing a romantic fanfic and posting it for all the world to see was synonymous with getting a bikini wax done on the front steps of the county courthouse.  Their synopsis is correct.  At least, that’s how it feels to the one who wrote it.  You post your hard work and then sit back and hope and pray with all your might that it will be well received, all while crossing your fingers that you succeeded in capturing the essence of the characters you penned.  Rarely does anyone fail.  But, when you have such characters as ’Steve & Kayla’, ’Stefan & Katherine’, and the mysterious ’Tucker McCall’ (all given to us by Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans) to work with, it’s nearly impossible to fail.  I give credit to the actors for that.  What a testament it is when the characters they have portrayed make such an enduring impression that, even though those characters are no longer on our screens, we still want more.  We want more, so we write more.  We write stories that continue or redefine what we saw on our screens.  We write stories that take the characters a step beyond what we saw because what we saw wasn‘t nearly enough.  We write stories so that we never have to accept the end of what the actors were once able to give us, and what we want them to share with us again.  That’s some powerful chemistry… stuff legends are made of.  Or, so we fanfic writers think.  I have a feeling our readers do, too.

As for the readers, never once think that a fanfic writer doesn’t realize that if not for them, there would be little need to write their stories.  Readers give us our motivation, all while serving as the very reason we share to begin with.  The characters as portrayed by our favorite actors may serve as our inspiration, but how wasted would that inspiration be if there was no one to read our shared works? The only mistake readers of fanfics make is to think for one minute that they are not appreciated.  They are appreciated, as are their comments.  Readers are who makes those countless hours spent plunking away at the keyboard all worthwhile, often after they have not only encouraged us to continue, but fueled our imagination to do so.  They are our ‘viewing audience’, our ‘sponsors‘, and our ‘desired demographics‘.  Readers are priceless, and fanfic writers love them… with a passion.

I write because I never want to see the legacies of ‘Steve & Kayla’, ‘Stefan & Katherine’, or the new ‘Tucker McCall’ end.  I write because I want more.  Thanks to the extraordinary talents of the actors who portrayed them, I’ll never get enough of those characters.  Thanks to fan fiction, I won’t have to.

‘Relive the Magic’ is so fortunate to have a wide array of wonderful and heartfelt stories, written by so many talented and gifted people, though I am sure they would deny such a claim.  They are talented and gifted… very much so.  From the smallest of ‘billets’ to the never-ending sagas of full-length fanfics, RTM has them all.  Extraordinary Bope and Tanna fanfics are found there well as.  Trouble is, both the readers and the writers, want more.  So, if you’ve ever tried your hand at writing a fanfic, you’re welcome to share it with us.  If you’ve never written a fanfic, yet contemplated doing so, take the plunge.  Write what’s inside you.  Write what you want to see, what you want to read.  More importantly, write what you feel.  That’s the secret to writing fanfics.  Write as if you are writing for yourself and no one else, and then dare to share.  Take the plunge.  Why not become a member of that rare and elite breed known as fanfic writers?  I can honestly say that, as scary as it was, it was a leap I have never regretted taking.  It was one that has enriched my life beyond measure, just as my readers have… as they still do.  I have no doubt that all the wonderful writers at RTM will tell you the same.

Reader, writer, or both; we’re all richer for sharing in the love of the characters we adore.  And whether we admit it or not, there’s a little bit of a soap opera writer in all of us… a good one, too.  😉

Miahappy - March 24, 2010 - 8:59 am

Amen, amen, amen…. I agree with every word you said, Carol! That first chapter too me a LONG time to post. I can’t tell you how many times I thought of writing a story, but chickened out. When it finally went up, I practically held my breath, wondering if it would be well received… It is a daunting task – not the writing – the posting! Putting yourself out there can be incredibly intimidating, but monumentally rewarding.

That first love scene? Forget about it. Wow, is that tough. I knew what I loved to read, what stories really sucked me in… All of them involved very intense emotions, which usually culminated in very passionate love scenes. It’s not that I don’t enjoy the PG-13 or below stories, I absolutely do, but when I began writing I decided to go for it full force, and write what I enjoyed reading the most.

I’ll never forget writing that first love scene, nor the terror I felt posting it. Though irrational, because I have NEVER seen a negative comment regarding anyones writing posted before, I just KNEW people were going to think I was perverted or sick for writing such ‘trash.’ But, once it was posted, and very well received, the fears were relieved and I was very glad I took the chance.

I think of Mary Beth’s comment…Do something that scares you. Well, writing that first FF definitely scared the hell out of me. But, now I consider it my way of blowing off steam and I am thrilled that there are people who enjoy reading it.

You could not be more right about our readers. I don’t think non-authors realize how important and powerful their comments can be. Without intending to, those comments can inspire, motivate and determine the outcome of many areas of a story. I have gotten countless ideas from the smallest of comments which have enriched my story far beyond where it was originally intended. Without readers who enjoy losing themselves in our favorite characters, the stories would be nothing more than words on a screen and a huge waste of time!

I am sad to know that our favorites will not appear on screen again, but take great solace in the fact that they will live forever in the ether…our FF will help make that happen and will we can enjoy them as long as they are in our hearts.

And to those who are afraid to take the plunge? There’s only one way to do it…just jump right in. You can’t imagine the pleasure that can be experienced if you are willing to put yourself out there. A billet is a great entry into the writing world. It’s little more than a paragraph, but can be so fun!

As for the soap writers of today…I’ll keep my mouth closed about them. My bitter party has only begun with them so the less I say about them the better!

I’ll stick with FF and enjoy every moment of reading…and writing!

Sherry S. - March 24, 2010 - 9:26 am

Very nicely written Carol! It’s very good insight for those of us that can’t or won’t attempt fan fiction. Common sense tells me that positive remarks only encourage our fan fiction writers to continue their stories. I can also see where a question or remark can change the course of the story as Miahappy stated in her comment. As a reader, I know I’m grateful for all of our fan fiction writers. Each story is different…each story brings a different version of our favorite character…each story leaves a footprint in our hearts. Thank you to all who continue to write fan fiction.

Giddy - March 24, 2010 - 10:23 am

Yes I am one of those fan fic writers who was initially terrified to take that first step. I didn’t even read fan fic until Carol started her ‘Wanted’ story. I peeked inside one day and I was immediately hooked as a reader/stalker. I was one of those who was skeptical that any “amateur” writer could successfully capture the essence of these characters that I love so much. But within the first couple of chapters of ‘Wanted’ I saw immediately what I had been missing. Here was a time period story centered on the characters of Steve and Kayla, set in the old west, and reading it is as real as watching it play out on screen. The characterization is brilliant and the visuals are superb. It is a story so good that I can actually see it playing out in my imagination.

So inspired was I by that story, I decided one day to take the plunge myself and began plunking away on a Stefan and Katherine fan fic. I had several chapters written before I got the nerve to even tell anyone I was writing. I didn’t want to post. Why would anyone want to read my writing? I’m not that good. Still, Carol convinced me to face my fears and post a chapter just to see what kind of reaction I would get. I will say that I have never regretted it. Not only does it provide a creative outlet through the weaving of an original story, but it allows us to keep alive those charcters we love so much. It also gives us the freedom to write them our way, with no compromises.

The readers on RTM are so amazing and so supportive. I agree that if not for them, I would probably not be doing what I am doing (spending much of my free time writing). I love it when they stalk and I especially love reading their feedback/speculations. It warms the cockles of my heart to go in and see that people are enjoying my story. I will also say that the readers on RTM are a rare breed because they actually DISCUSS the story. They don’t simply demand updates (though they do that pretty well too) and then sit back and wait. They talk about the story and the characters. They relay their hopes and fears for where we are taking the characters, but one thing they never do is abandon us. They are with us for the entire journey, and that, my friends, is extremely gratifying.
.

Christine - March 24, 2010 - 4:19 pm

Wow Carol that was spot on. I wrote my first story a few years ago. I wrote it for myself never thinking I’d show it to anyone let alone post it on the web. Before that I’d had never written anything besides progress notes in patients charts. Then last fall I found this site and started reading all the wonderful stories here. So one day I took a chance and posted mine. Now I’m hooked, I love reading and writing fanfic.

I’ve not told any of friends that I do this, my husband doesn’t even know. Since my stories are R rated I don’t know if he’d be upset or aroused by my stories. I’m hoping aroused.

Kris - March 24, 2010 - 10:06 pm

There was a time I didn’t read fanfic. I never sought it out.

But one day when I was at loose ends, I started reading someone’s fanfic and found myself wanting an answer to that age-old question: What’s going to happen next? And once I found myself asking that question, I knew I needed to stick around and find out the answer.

Since that time, I’ve found myself reading many fanfics, and all of them have something delightful to offer. It’s fun to have a window into someone else’s thoughts about scenes they would have welcomed the chance to see, because Days never gave us enough of Steve and Kayla.

Don’t get me wrong. I was glad to see what we did see, for the most part. Just SEEING Steve and Kayla again onscreen was a long-held wish of mine, and I’ll be forever grateful to Days that it came true, no matter what the shortcomings of the story turned out to be.

To see Steve and Kayla discuss important issues, support and encourage each other, laugh, tease, and make mad passionate love was a wonderful thing! But there were also things we were denied: the chance to see them fall in love again, for example. That’s where fanfic comes in. It can fix that for us…make it right, so to speak.

I love that.

So for all of you who write, thank you. Thank you for “making it right.”

Kris

Tammy - March 25, 2010 - 1:35 am

I am a beginner in Fan Fic writing, I am also one of those that was scared to begin writing. I love reading all the stories, you all are so incredibly talented, and such amazing stories. I decided that I wanted to try out writing fanfic, I love it, it is so much fun. I love writing rewrites and the regular stories and will continue to keep on writing.
I love it that even though we can’t see our characters on tv, we can get our fix through the wonderful stories, which I am so grateful for.

Mary Beth to Return for Alice’s Memorial

Although the details still seem sketchy, it appears Mary Beth has been asked back for an appearance during the memorial for Alice that will take place during May sweeps.  According to Corday “ ..what we’ve decided to do is we will play her as being ill and the end is coming and one by one, characters who loved her dearly or are related to her, from the past, will come to the show and ‘visit’ with her. You can start to imagine the list.”

Here is the full press release from Soap Opera Digest

Popular Stars Back To DAYS
Digest has obtained the list of actors who have been asked to return for Alice’s sendoff: Jaime Lyn Bauer (Laura Horton), Christie Clark (Carrie Brady), Roark Critchlow (Mike Horton), Maree Cheatham (Marie Horton), Bryan R. Dattilo (Lucas Horton), Mary Beth Evans (Kayla Johnson), Patsy Pease (Kimberly Brady), Melissa Reeves (Jennifer) and Lisa Trusel (Melissa Anderson) are all reportedly returning to Salem. “Most of them aren’t coming back for just one day,” says an insider. “Some will appear in a few episodes.” Frances Reid (ex-Alice) passed away on February 3 and Digest reported exclusively that the show had big plans to bring a slew of stars back to say good-bye. TVGuidemagazine.com reported earlier that Charles Shaughnessy (Shane) is also reprising the role of superspy Shane Donovan.

This is fantastic news, cant wait to see Mary Beth Evans back at Days, even if it is only for a short time.

Liz K - March 19, 2010 - 11:00 pm

I am trying not to have any expectations (good or bad) as far as what scenes Kayla/MBE will have and how they will explain her and Steve’s absence. I am just happy Days is going all out in honoring Frances, and that Mary Beth is going to be part of it. It will be so wonderful to see her.

Started Out Young, Now I’m Feeling Restless.

~By Liz…

Y&R, I’ve got some baggage I need you to help me unload.

No pressure though. Really.

My name’s Liz, and I am a long time soap opera viewer (i.e.  a viewer with a lot of baggage). I started watching soaps as a 9 year old kid who had to wait for the babysitter’s show to be over before we could head to the park. Fortunately or unfortunately, that was in the ‘golden era’ of soap operas as I see it, the 80’s, and a high standard was set. The babysitter soon had me hooked on Days of our Lives’ Bo and Hope and then a couple of years later, Steve and Kayla;  but I did love the entire show. After Days aired in the afternoon, I would sometimes watch Another World and Santa Barbara too.

On any soap I stumbled across, romance, adventure, suspense and family drama was intensely emotional, perfectly balanced, rich with complexity and FUN to watch. The characters were relatable, wildly charismatic, and instantly made you care for them, root for them. Daytime TV families became part of our “extended families” as viewers; these were shows that appealed to multiple generations. There were over the top characters and plots but they only served as mere “side stories” to balance out the drama and the richness of the central storylines.  Today’s soaps on the other hand, serve up a lot of those side dishes, minus the meat, minus the rich flavor.

After years of being fed a lot of tasteless garnish, I got to the point where I stopped caring about daytime dramas in general. The medium I once loved just lost so much heart and soul… it became one huge cliche after another. The devil came to Salem and I thought that was an apropo representation of  whatever possessed the writers and producers to ruin the daytime television I once loved. Despite producers’ and networks’ claims to the contrary, I honestly came to believe they just don’t care what the viewers think and say, as long they get their key demographic and are able to draw in advertising dollars. The networks and producers ignore us and then blame the drop in daytime viewership on things like OJ Simpson, a variety of shows to watch on cable and increased competition- never pointing the finger where it belongs: the lack of quality programming. I am not saying there weren’t other factors , but I think the  change in daytime storytelling takes most of the blame for alienating long time viewers (in particular the focus on vapid, flat, teen-centered melodrama, campy/unrealistic plotlines, never ending cliche triangles, sci-fi B-movie style special effects nonsense).   It’s been said that the ultimate expression of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result each time. Daytime seems unwilling to change the trite and lazy storytelling, and yet expects the viewers to continue caring?  The reason we don’t watch in the long haul is simple: there’s nothing that grabs hold of our hearts and attention. I don’t expect to see any writing or any show resembling the 80’s era; I doubt anyone expects that. I just want soaps to put a priority on quality rather than shock value. It’s not asking for a lot.

For years and years (after quitting Days) I watched soaps just to see my favorite actors (Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans) on whatever soaps they were on (respectively and together);  Stephen and Mary Beth made tuning in to any show worthwhile, because they always injected heart and humanity into their characters whenever it was possible and gave us SO many breathtaking performances.  I learned not to invest too much in the shows as a whole however, as I would inevitably get frustrated as viewers were seemingly ‘punished’ for expecting things as simple as motivation, momentum and continuity. [The only exception I saw was the way Mary Beth’s Sierra was written at As The World Turns.  That unfortunately was a (mostly) recurring character, so we didn’t see enough of her].

Here I am in 2010 and Stephen Nichols has joined an incredible cast of actors, playing the role of Tucker McCall on daytime’s #1 soap, The Young and the Restless.  I am trying to have some faith.  It does seem so different from the soaps that scared me away from caring about daytime TV. I am excited to see Stephen and  I know he will make this role memorable, as he always does. But it’s hard to get too invested in the show as a whole. As I’ve said…I’ve got some baggage. I know I’m not alone. There are a few million of us viewers who have tuned out over the past decade or two.

My fears and impressions so far as a new viewer….

Some days I tune in and try to watch the whole show and am riveted to the screen by scenes such as Adam’s downfall and the whole town of Genoa City confronting him. Other days I am bored to tears by talk of stocks and acquisitions that I couldn’t care less about (until or unless these talks are tied into some relationship issue/story).

Y&R is rich in history, and many of the characters have been on the show for quite some time and have significant ties to the core families in Genoa City. The show has a large cast as well. This makes me nervous. Will Tucker be given the opportunity to become a key figure among the many other, longtime characters? Will the writers find time to have fun figuring out who Tucker is and deliver the rich story he merits (as Katherine’s son, played by a daytime icon like Stephen)?  Then there’s the airtime: Stephen’s been on an average of two days a week on most weeks. This concerns me as well. On one hand, I appreciate that the Y&R writers understand that they have to develop his story slowly, carefully. Too many daytime shows throw new characters at you…and it’s too much, too fast. I think audiences resent that on the whole.

On the other hand, sometimes I feel like they build up Tucker’s story, and then lose momentum by not continuing the scenes (at least a little bit) into the next day.  I wish we knew more about his past than we do at the moment. All we really seem to know is that he still hates Katherine for abandoning him. Why is that?  Has he had a difficult life? Is Y&R going to get to that at some point soon? Or are we to assume that he just hates Katherine for leaving him and to believe it’s simple as that?  I think exploring that backstory would add so much to the current story. I know I should just sit back and relax and enjoy the ride….and I am trying to have faith that Y&R writers have a plan for Tucker, trying to believe that they are stucturing his story a certain way on purpose.  So many shows don’t do that.

What’s giving me faith: most of the characters on this show have gray areas; they are complex characters who resemble human beings…not completely good, not completely bad. The bad guys have heart and complexity, the good guys have their weaknesses.  I have to believe that’s what lies ahead for Tucker; a complex past and a rich future.  The women are quirky, complex, strong, resilient, assertive and vulnerable, too. Already Stephen’s chemistry with Jeanne Cooper as mother and son is just more than you could dream up; it’s perfection and I am loving their dynamic and their scenes together.  I see so much potential for the role of Tucker as a whole…I hope his story really takes off soon.

Who knows, maybe if and when that happens, I may just be able to unload the baggage and enjoy watching daytime TV again?

What are your thoughts? I would love to hear them! Are you a long time Y&R or daytime viewer- what’s your perspective? Tucker fans, do you share my concerns or do you have other concerns… Or do you think it’s all good so far?

In years past, I have loved Y&R. I’ve watched on and off dependent on storylines. Y&R seems to know how to deliver those important ‘fan’ moments…and to this day I still recall several that have never left my mind. Finding Lauren buried alive in a casket and the story of Sheila kidnapping Lauren’s baby are the first that come to mind. I’m hoping with time, that Tucker’s backstory will be part of his character’s demeanor…we’ll know where he came from, was he happy with his adopted parents, does he have a family? I too, wish the character was visible more than 2 days a week, but that’s because I want Stephen on my screen. Chances are, they’re allowing fans to get used to Stephen as WR’s replacement…and no doubt he’ll have some impact as Kay C’s son…Stephen couldn’t be in a better position.

Giddy - March 17, 2010 - 8:34 am

I had never watched Y&R before Stephen joined the show and I must say the very first time I tuned in I was impressed with how different that show is from Days and even GH. To me it has much more of a primetime quality to it. At this point I am not yet greatly invested in any of the other character except Tucker and Katherine, but I know that will change once I have become more familiar with everyone’s history. At this point, I am really hoping the writers take the time to flesh out Tucker’s history. I agree that it is often very difficult to establish a new character within such a long standing cast, because you need to make readers care about this person that they have nothing invested in. I have read lots of positive comments about Stephen from longtime viewers on other boards, so I am optimistic that he will eventually become an integral part of the show. I have been impressed with what I have seen so far of Maria Arena Bell and I hope she realizes that a gold mine she has with Stephen.

I couldn’t have said it better myself, Liz. Times have changed. These shows are not what they once were, and the viewers’ opinions/attitudes don’t seem to matter. I was so excited to have my favorite fictional characters of all time return to my screen after over 15 years, only to be disappointed, frustrated, and disgusted to the point I will never watch the show again. It would take a lot to get me invested in another daytime drama and so far I haven’t seen it. Tucker’s story is great, but they are only dealing with surface issues. Until I know they are going to go further in depth, I am not willing to invest the time and effort it takes to become involved with a new show.

If or when that time comes, perhaps…but for now I’ll just enjoy watching one of my favorites doing what he does best.

Now, if Mary Beth were to join the cast…all bets would be off!!!!

Mary - March 17, 2010 - 1:15 pm

I watched Y&R years ago back when Nicki was married to Victor, dying from some unknown disease, and having an affair with the original Jack (not Peter Bergman), Jill and Katherine hated each other, Ester always wore that god-awful maids outfit, Brad was a pool-boy cleaning the Abbotts pool long before he fell in love with Tracey and Sherman Moore played Malcolm. And this is a perfect example of what Liz is talking about and about what daytime has lost. We all have certain storylines that are forever burned into our hearts and minds from our favorite characters. The ones that we related closest to with experiences in our own lives. The characters had depth, personality, hearts and souls. And this is what is missing in daytime today. I watch a lot of old clips, as I am sure many of you do, and some of the greatest scenes have very little conversation in them. The scene grabs you from the silent emotions just as much as it does from what the characters are actually saying. As an example, when was the last time a daytime couple had their own theme song? Sometimes its the small, tiny details that make the scene and not so much the dialog. JMO

With all that being said, this is what I’m hoping I will see from the Tucker character. The reason he holds such resentment towards Katherine is due to the less than perfect life he grew up in. Not saying that he had bad parents, but more due to victim of circumstances, i.e. parents lost their job, lost their house, moved to new town, all of which are very real possibilities. Did he grow up all to fast, having to let go of his dreams to help support his struggling family? Did he finally find his birth mother to see her living a life of luxury while his was more of a day to day struggle? I also would like to see of any past relationships he had and why they ended? Why does he feel like women are there solely for his use only to dispose of or dismiss them when they no longer serve a purpose? Can this also be tied back to Katherine giving him up for adoption and exactly how did he find out about the adoption?

So I guess to give you an answer as to investing my time into another show, not at this moment. I will continue to watch Tucker and his storylines but until his character is developed into more than just a business tycoon that is determined to bring Katherine down, I won’t be investing too much time into it.

Is it all good? Honestly, for me it’s simply too soon to tell. I’m waiting, and hoping, and waiting… and hoping. I can’t honestly say I’m into soap operas in general. I’m into the actors, namely Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans. I’m especially in when that are together. I did watch Y&R years and years ago… when Jill did nails and Katherine drank like a fish. I remember crushing on ‘The Hoff’, but whatever it was that held my interest then didn’t succeed in keeping it. Now, with Stephen Nichols on the show, I’m there. And, just like I did when S&K returned to DOOL, I am holding my breath hoping with all my might that this time, they get it right. DOOL certainly didn’t. But, I have faith in Y&R, and I do have more faith in Maria Arena Bell than I ever did in Ken Corday, Dena Higley, Gary Tomlin, Bob Guza, or the likes. I do hope they take their time is adding layers to Tucker McCall. I hope they serve up what I have no doubt Stephen Nichols can deliver. The cast is large, but unlike other soaps, Y&R does tend to overlap storylines and spread the screen time around in a more even keel. I don’t know if they will ‘get it right’ like I previously stated, but I do know that as long as Stephen is on the show, I will be watching. Soaps aren’t what they use to be, but thank goodness there are actors who consistently deliver. With Stephen playing Tucker, I know I don’t have to worry about a Steve Johnson or Stefan Cassadine redux, seeing how this is not DOOL or GH. He will make this role all his own when given the chance, and that is when I will become fully invested.

My mother watched Y&R when I was a very small child but stopped when she went back to working full time. Now that she’s retired she’s started watching again and doesn’t miss an episode. I watched the show sporadically through the years depending on what was going on and what characters were involved. Now that Stephen is on I find myself getting back into it. There are a lot of story lines that I’m not the least bit interesetd in but there are some that are pulling me in more and more but my main focus for watching the show is to see what Stephen is doing with Tucker. Truly if Stephen hadn’t joined the cast I doubt that I would be watching any soaps at all.

Jen - March 18, 2010 - 8:18 am

Great blog Liz! I tend to agree with you and the fact that I am picking up a new soap JUST for Stephen has me at a disadvantage because I have to learn all these characters along with Tucker. I will admit, I am having a hard time getting into Y&R, but it’s starting to get a little easier and I am liking the progression of Tucker. I can’t wait to hear more of his back story and where he is coming from. I am under the assumption that soaps in general are just not the same shows we grew up on, it was bound to happen. Do I like it all the time? Well no, but because of the actors that bring us these characters I am a little more willing to hang in there with it. I do see a lot of potential with the character of Tucker, I hope that is tapped into.

Julie - March 18, 2010 - 7:17 pm

Love the blog Liz. Well I used to watch Y&R regularly in the 80’s & 90’s as it used to screen directly after Days on the same TV channel, so I am familiar with most of the characters. I havent watched it for a couple of years but I am finding it easy to get back into it, as alot of the characters that were on the show in the 80’s & 90’s are still around, and I like that. Y&R is the best looking soap around, it still has fairly good production values & looks like a million bucks compared to some of the other soaps coughDayscough LOLOL, the acting is solid & I havent watched enough of the show yet to comment on the writing. I am really enjoying the Tucker scenes, particularly the scenes with Kay, there is definite chemistry between SN & JC. Whilst I want to see Tucker on the show everyday, I think the writers are doing a good job in introducing this new character slowly and linking him to a legacy character. Cant wait to see what they have in store for Tucker, all I need now is MAry Beth Evans on the show and I will be hooked.
